Depression is not a disease but it is also consider as disease or it is manifestation of a disease. Depression originates from the stress and it is mainly happen with sustained stress but it is not only cause of depression as many people didn't get depressed after they are stressed and many get depressed even they didn't have any stress. Depression is basically depend on biological factors like genes and also depend on our mental health and activities. And also it vary with our environment also as many live in high stressed environment where there are fight, debates etc. many time those people who live in this environment get depressed but there are also many people who live in very clean environment but they didn't have nothing to do, they also live in depression. It also cause due to our hormones sometime our hormones experience sudden distraction due to which changes of getting depressed increases and also depend on Biological, Psychological and Social factors. In the biological factors sometime our hormones and gens feels a sudden change which affect our brain and make us to thought on little things which makes us depressed, sometime we get depressed by our psychology as many thought that they didn't success in their life and many people get in depression because their loved one passed away. And in social factor we get depressed because of our environment as if we live in stressed environment then there are huge chances to get in depression.
Now the other question is that How we can differentiate Depression and Sadness???
Sadness is a mood which an either longer for 2-3 days but the depression sometimes because of reason and sometimes because of without reason it last for much time as it can also happen that we live full life with depression and in this there are very less chances that we feels low depression. Depression is classified with its stage as Low, Moderate and Severe which refers to less depressed, high depressed and extreme depressed and many people reach to Severe stage very early because of loneliness.
Now everyone thought about How we can save ourselves from depression???
Normally many doctors suggest that to try routine travel, be creative, think positive, practice yoga etc. if this work for depression treatment then it is good but the reality is that it doesn't help any person who is in depression because the depression problem is that in which we can't do positive things like these as we fell much helpless in the depression that we can't do that. If we try these things, so for sometime it makes us better but it is not a long lasting solution. Many people also takes pills for this but they become addict for the pills and these pills also doesn't work for our depression but these pills make us sleep or deviate our mind which also affect our brain.

Many people said that people choose depression by choice as they want to be in depression so they had practice that thing So the reality is that none of the person choose depression for themselves as when they got depressed they even didn't know that. No one want to live in depressed state as everyone one want to live a happy life but sometimes the circumstances changes thoughts.
Depression also cause for suicidal thoughts and many people commit suicide only because of depression. So to avoid this the best solution is to contact with family and friends and share feeling with them even if we find that our close one is in depression then we have to talk with that person. Many of the people didn't have awareness about this and even many people can't identify someone as he/she is in depression. We have to share our thoughts regularly with our close ones.
