On April 27, 1865, the steamboat SS SULTANA was exploded in Mississippi river, at Memphis, kills up to 1,800 passengers out of 2,427 in greatest maritime disaster in United States history.
It remains the worst maritime disaster. Those were the days after the civil war when steamboat Sultana sank on the Mississippi river on April 27, 1865, killing 1800 passengers almost all of them were the former prisoners of war returning home from south.
The steamboat sultana was 250- foot long built in 1863, Cincinnati, and was designed to carry only 376 passengers. It was big business and it became a competition among boat to load more prisoners and also government pays $5 per enlisted man to carry men upriver from the south.
On April 24, 1865 three Sultana steamboats was ready to take prisoner from south. Sultana captain knew that one of four boiler was leaking but he ignore the danger.
On April 27, 1865 the leaking boiler explode and destroyed the boat. Many of prisoner were killed in this explosion. The Sultana was in flame and prisoners also was injured yet no rescue efforts were undertaken.
In this maritime disaster almost 1,800 prisoner were died and some also didn't recognise. At some steps government also was responsible. And thereafter government didn't take any action on this tragedy.
